Overcoming Temptation
And he did evil because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.
— II Chronicles 12:14
Have you ever been caught off guard by temptation? Have you found yourself unprepared and unable to resist the lure of sin? If so, you are not alone. Many of us have fallen into temptation because we failed to prepare our hearts and minds for the battles ahead.
Rehoboam, the king of Judah, also fell into temptation because he was not prepared to seek the Lord. He started off seeking the Lord, but as the pressures of life mounted, he turned away from God. Jesus, on the other hand, spent thirty years preparing Himself for the ultimate temptation. He studied the Scriptures, asked questions, and was filled with the Holy Spirit before facing Satan in the wilderness.
Knowing our true identity in Christ is also crucial to resisting temptation. Satan tried to get Jesus to doubt who He was, but Jesus anchored His faith in His Father's words. We must also anchor our faith in who God says we are and resist the devil's attempts to deceive us.
All temptation is rooted in selfishness, and controlling our thoughts is key to resisting temptation. We must focus on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). We must also use the Word of God to counter every temptation, just as Jesus did.
Preparation is essential to overcoming temptation. We must be filled with the Holy Spirit, know our true identity in Christ, and control our thoughts.
We must also use the Word of God to resist every temptation. Be sure to start thinking about how to deal with it before you're in the middle of a huge temptation. Start preparing yourself today, and when temptation comes, you will be able to resist it.
PRAYER
