God Loved You Before You Were Worth It
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
— Romans 5:8
Think about how human love actually works. Your friend is kind to you, so you like them. Someone hurts you badly, and slowly you pull away. A relationship breaks down and the love that felt so solid just cools off. That is not weakness. That is just how human love operates. It runs on what it receives.
God's love does not work that way. Romans 5:8 says, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Not after we got our lives together. Not after we proved ourselves. While we were still a mess. That was when He moved.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shows us what this love looks like up close. "Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up... bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Read that slowly. This is not describing how we love on our best days. This is describing how God loves you on your worst ones.
And here is what this means for your actual day. Romans 5:5 says the love of God has been poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit. That same love is already living inside you right now. So when you are sitting across from a family member who has hurt you repeatedly, or dealing with a colleague who makes everything harder, you are not expected to summon love from somewhere inside yourself. You draw it from Him. The Holy Spirit in you already has more than enough for that person.
You are not working love up. You are releasing what God already placed there. That is the whole difference between striving and faith.
PRAYER
Father, thank You for loving me before I gave You any reason to. That love is not just a fact about You, it is living inside me through the Holy Spirit. When I am with someone I find hard to love today, remind me I am not doing this alone. Your love in me is enough for them. Amen
Amen
