Ephesians 1:4 Says God Chose You Before The Foundation Of The World — Here Is What It Means To Be Known And Selected Before You Ever Existed
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
— John 17:24
Ephesians 1:4 says God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. Before any star was placed in the sky, before the first morning, before anything visible existed, you were already in the mind and heart of God. This is not a small thought. It is the opening statement of who you are.
This selection was not based on what you would do or become. Ephesians 1:5-6 says He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace. The phrase according to the purpose of His will makes it clear. The choosing was driven by His nature, not your merit. He chose you because of who He is.
1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. When people evaluate each other, they use visible criteria: success, appearance, reputation. God's evaluation works differently. He sees what is in the heart, and He also sees what the heart can become when it is connected to Him.
Romans 8:29-30 describes a chain that begins before time: those He foreknew He also predestined, those He predestined He also called, those He called He also justified, those He justified He also glorified. This is not a chain you entered partway through. You were in view from the very beginning. God's intention for you was glory, established before the world began.
As you begin this new day, this new year, you are not starting from nowhere. You are walking forward in a purpose that was written before history began. You are not an accident and you are not an afterthought. Let this truth shape how you see yourself and how you move through whatever this year brings.
PRAYER
Lord, thank You for choosing me before the world began. Let the truth of my identity in Christ shape how I see myself and how I walk through this year.
Amen
