Finding Hope In A Negative World
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
— Joshua 1:9
In a world filled with negativity, it's easy to lose hope and joy. From the challenges we face personally to the overwhelming problems of the world, it can feel like love and joy are slipping away from our lives. Do you know, the negative things happening around you have the power to harden your heart and diminish your love for God and others.
Jesus warned us in Matthew 24:12 that as iniquity abounds, the love of many will grow cold. The negativity in the world can gradually bury our hearts under layers of discouragement, if we allow it. So, how do we stay positive in the midst of such a negative world?
The answer lies in Joshua 1:9, where God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous, not to be afraid or dismayed. These are opposing forces, and we must resist both fear and discouragement. The Lord doesn't automatically dispel these negative emotions; rather, He flows through us. Ephesians 3:20 teaches us that God's power works in proportion to the degree we allow it to work in us. When we become discouraged, we hinder the flow of God's power.
Consider the story of David in 1 Samuel 30:6. He faced a dire situation, yet he encouraged himself in the Lord. David took the Word of God and used it to uplift his spirit. Despite the bleak circumstances, he held on to God's promises and saw them come to pass.
Recognize that Satan uses the negative influences of this world to discourage you. Guard your mind and stay plugged into God's Word. Isaiah 26:3 promises perfect peace to those whose minds are stayed upon the Lord. Be intentional about encouraging yourself in the Lord, for it is not the norm to be encouraged in a negative world.
PRAYER
Lord, in a world full of negativity, help me keep my heart encouraged in You. Strengthen me to resist fear and discouragement. Let Your peace guard my mind as I hold on to Your promises.
Amen
