Harmony Within The Spirit, Soul, And The Heart

Do you ever wonder why even as Christians, we still struggle with things like pride or foolishness? Jesus made it clear that these issues originate from our hearts. But what’s the heart, really? In the Bible, the heart is more than just our spirit. It’s also our soul—the seat of our thoughts, emotions, and will.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the word of God can discern the thoughts and intents of the heart, separating soul and spirit. This means our heart encompasses our entire inner being—our spirit and our soul. So, when the Bible tells us to believe with all our heart (Acts 8:37) and to serve with singleness of heart (Colossians 3:22), it’s talking about our whole inner person.

Have you noticed that your born-again spirit isn’t the source of sin? Our struggles come from the soul—the part of us that includes our mind, will, and emotions. Our spirit is renewed at salvation, but our soul needs constant renewal through God’s word. James 4:8 warns us that our hearts can have two minds or ways of thinking. That’s why renewing our mind with scripture is crucial. It’s about aligning our thoughts with God’s truth.

How do we achieve this singleness of heart? By letting the peace of God guard our hearts (Philippians 4:7). When we focus on Jesus and allow His peace to rule, our hearts—spirit and soul—are kept in perfect harmony. This unity brings forth good things from the treasure within us.
