The Godly Fear That Leads To Life

Have you ever been confused by the idea of fearing God? On the one hand, the Bible tells us not to be afraid because God’s perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18). On the other hand, Jesus says we should fear the One who has power over our eternal destiny (Luke 12:5). So, which is it? The answer lies in understanding that there are two types of fear.

The kind of fear that torments, causing dread and terror, is not from God. As 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, God has given us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind, not a spirit of fear. This type of fear is what Satan uses to torment us, to make us shrink away from God’s presence. But there’s another kind of fear that’s different—a fear that’s rooted in reverence and awe. This is the fear the Bible encourages us to have.

Hebrews 12:28 tells us to serve God with reverence and godly fear. This fear isn’t about being scared of God; it’s about recognizing His holiness, His power, and His goodness. It’s an awe that leads us to live in a way that honors Him. For those of us who have accepted Christ, it’s not terror that keeps us from sin but the realization of God’s incredible goodness. It’s His goodness that draws us closer to Him, and it’s in this awe and reverence that we find true peace.

Why should we fear God? Not out of dread but out of a deep respect for His greatness and love. This godly fear isn’t about punishment; it’s about living in awe of a God who is so good, so powerful, that our only response is to honor and obey Him.
