Feeling Sorry Is Not The Same As Repentance

Guilt has a way of keeping you exactly where you are. You replay the thing you did, you feel awful about it, and after a while feeling awful starts to feel like you are doing something about it. You are not.

The prodigal son sat in a pig pen with none of that. Luke 15:18 says, "I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee." No excuse. No spin about how the famine was really the problem. He got up and started walking home.

Real talk, that is what repentance actually is. Not an emotion, a direction. 2 Corinthians 7:10 says, "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." Worldly sorrow keeps you sitting in the pen feeling terrible about yourself. Godly sorrow gets you on your feet.

Here is the thing about the walk home. The Father is not waiting at the door with a bill. Isaiah 53:4 says, "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows." Jesus already carried the weight you are still trying to pay off, so turning around is not you buying your way back. It is you agreeing with what He already settled.

So when the thing you said at 2am is still playing at 9am, when you have already apologised to your friend twice and still feel like trash, notice that the feeling is not moving you anywhere. Get up instead. Say it plainly to God, one honest sentence, and then leave it with Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes the peace land in you, so you are not working up a better feeling, you are just turning in the right direction.

Your sorrow was never meant to be a place you live. It was meant to be the thing that turns you around. The joy is on the other side of the turn, and the Father has been watching the road.
