Someone Already Paid What You Could Not

Picture a man buried under a loan he will never repay. A friend quietly goes to the bank and clears the whole thing. The man keeps living scared, because nobody told him it was done.

That is a lot of Christians. The debt was sin, it was real, and none of us had the money for it. Romans 5:8 says, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." While we were yet sinners. Before the apology, before the clean up.

There are really only three ways to answer that. You can call it too good to be true and refuse it. You can insist you never owed anything in the first place. Or you can accept that it is paid and walk out free.

Romans 5:17 says, "For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ." Look at the verb. Receive. It is a gift being held out to you, not a wage you are working toward.

Righteousness being a gift is the part that trips people up. You cannot be good enough to earn it and you cannot be bad enough to lose it. The Holy Spirit is the One who settles that truth inside you, and He is patient about how long it takes.

If you have been living like the debt is still on your account, it is not. Jesus handled it. Come home and take the freedom He already bought for you.
