Righteousness Is A Gift Not A Wage

A lot of us are quietly running a scoreboard with God. Good week, He is pleased. Bad week, keep your head down until you have made up for it.

Paul watched people do exactly that. Romans 10:3 says, "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God." They were sincere about it. They were also exhausted, because they were hustling for something God was handing out free.

Imagine someone gives you a phone as a gift, then starts sending you monthly payment reminders. You would say that is not a gift, that is a loan in nicer wrapping. That is what we do with righteousness when we think believing gets us in and behaving keeps us in.

Paul said in Philippians 3:9 that he wanted to "be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith." This is a man with a religious CV nobody around him could touch. He counted all of it as worthless next to the righteousness God gives.

So when you snap at your mother, or the old habit wins again on a Tuesday night, guilt will tell you to go earn your way back into God's good books. You cannot, and you do not need to. You are wearing something Jesus bought, and it does not come off when you fail. Let the Holy Spirit remind you who you already are, because that is what actually changes how you live.

God is not waiting for you to become righteous. He already sees you that way.
