Your Calling Was Ready Before You Were

Real talk, most people your age get asked what they want to do with their life long before anyone tells them God already decided something about it.

Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Read the order there. The works were prepared first. You were made to fit them. You are not inventing a purpose from scratch, you are finding one that was already lying there with your name on it.

One clue is what you love doing. There is something you could do for hours without checking the time, and that is not an accident. Psalm 16:11 says, "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." God is not looking for someone miserable enough to be useful. Joy is part of how He leads.

The other clue is what you cannot stand. Nehemiah 1:4 says, "And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven." He heard the walls were broken and he could not let it go. That burning thing in you when you see somebody treated badly, or a friend believing lies about God, is worth paying attention to. Your calling usually sits where the thing you love meets the thing that breaks your heart.

In an ordinary week this looks small. You notice you keep ending up as the person your friends call at midnight, or you are the one who explains something until it finally clicks for someone. Follow that. You do not have to see the whole map before you take the next step, because the Holy Spirit inside you is the one doing the leading, not your five year plan.

There is an expression of God in you that nobody else carries the same way. He prepared the work before He made you, and He is not trying to hide it from you.
