A Branch Does Not Force Fruit

Most of us treat spiritual growth like a project. Wake up earlier, pray longer, fix the habit by Friday. Then the week ends and nothing really feels different, just tired.

Jesus put it a completely different way. John 15:4-5 says, "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." Notice He never told the branch to try harder at fruit.

A branch has one job, stay attached. Psalm 1:3 says the person rooted in God "shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." A tree in spring is not straining. It is drawing.

So abiding is not a technique you have to master. It is staying in what is already true, that you are joined to Jesus, forgiven and righteous in Him. You are not plugging in to get life. His life is already in you.

That changes the question when the group project falls apart or things go quiet at home. Instead of grinding on how to fix it yourself, you can ask what Jesus wants to do through you in it. The fear and the old habit do not get willpowered off, they get crowded out, the way dead leaves drop when new growth pushes through. The Holy Spirit is doing that in you right now.

You are not out here surviving on your own supply. You are attached to the Vine, and He has never once run dry.
