Dead Works Cannot Buy What Jesus Bought

You have checked the time in the middle of a prayer. So have I. You finish, feel a small relief that the box is ticked, and get on with the day.

Here is the thing. What actually gets you to open the Bible? If it is the idea that reading it puts you back in God's good books, then the reading is not doing what you think it is doing. Scripture has a name for that.

Hebrews 6:1 says, "Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God." Look at what God puts on the other side of dead works. Not better works. Not more works. Faith toward God.

Dead works are usually good things pointed in the wrong direction. Praying, giving, showing up, all of it aimed at buying something Jesus already paid for. It is like sending a message to a phone with no signal. Nothing is wrong with the message. It just was never going to travel that way.

So tomorrow morning, before the metro or the first lecture or the first meeting, you open the app and read the passage. Nothing about that changes God's opinion of you, because His opinion was settled at the cross. That is exactly what frees you to actually hear something. Ask the Holy Spirit to read it with you. He lives in you, and He is the One who makes the words land.

You are not writing to God hoping He replies. You are reading a letter from Someone who already came for you.
