Grace Changed Zacchaeus Before Any Rules Did

A man came to Jesus in Luke 18 asking what he had to do to inherit eternal life. It is the most natural question in the world, and the wrong one.

Jesus gave him the law, not because the law could save him, but because he needed to see that his own record was never going to be enough. He walked away sad. He had come with a payment plan and found out the price was beyond him.

Ephesians 2:8 and 9 say, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Not of yourselves. There is no version of this you pay for in instalments.

Then in the very next chapter Jesus invites Himself to dinner at the house of a man everybody despised. Nobody gave Zacchaeus a list. And Luke 19:8 says he stood up and said, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold."

That is what grace does when it actually lands. The rich young ruler got the standard and left unchanged. The tax collector got welcomed and gave half his money away by the end of dinner. So if you are trying to earn God's favour, expect the fear that comes with it. Romans 1:17 says "the just shall live by faith," and the Holy Spirit is the one who changes you from the inside once the earning stops.

Nobody was ever argued into that kind of generosity. Zacchaeus was just loved into it, and that is still how it works.
