Bless Your City And You Rise

Most people talk about their city like it is something happening to them. The traffic, the rent, the crowd, the noise that never stops. God talks about your city like it is somewhere you were placed on purpose.

He said it plainly to people who did not even want to be where they were. Jeremiah 29:7 says, "And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace." They were exiles. They still had an assignment. Notice the order too, the city's peace and your peace are tied together.

Here is the thing, Jesus never told you to become light. He said you already are. Matthew 5:14 says, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." That is identity, handed to you before a single good work shows up.

So what does blessing your city actually look like? Verse 16 keeps it simple. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." It looks like the neighbour whose name you finally learn, and work you do honestly because God is in you.

You are not squeezing any of this out of yourself. The same Spirit who raised Jesus lives in you, and He is the one who makes you notice the person nobody else notices. Pray for the people who run your city. Pray for the streets you walk every day. That prayer is not a small religious gesture, it is you releasing what God already dropped in you.

You are not stuck in your city. You are stationed in it. When it does well you do well, and God set it up that way on purpose.
