Holiness Is Not Trying Harder

Hearts go numb slowly. Nobody wakes up one morning cold toward God, it happens in small steps you barely notice.

Jesus described that drift in Matthew 13:15: "For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them." Notice the order. The heart thickens first, then the hearing goes.

That is why the small things are worth caring about. Not because God is keeping score, but because a clear conscience keeps your spiritual radar tuned. Little compromises do not change how God feels about you, they just dull the signal on your end.

Living right does not earn God's love. It helps you feel the love that is already there. 1 John 3:20 says, "For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things." That heavy feeling is usually your own conscience talking, not God's verdict. His love did not move.

Here is the thing about holiness. It is not you performing at a level God finally accepts. You were made righteous in Christ, and holiness is what comes out naturally when you stay connected to that. The Holy Spirit living in you does not need to be talked into producing it.

So keep your heart soft. Not with guilt, with nearness. Stay close and holiness takes care of itself, the way breathing does.
