Your Heart Can Go Dull Without You Noticing

Two people sit through the same message. One walks out different and the other walks out checking their phone. That gap is not about intelligence or about who is more spiritual.

The disciples had front row seats to everything. They watched Jesus feed thousands from a few loaves, and a short while later they were arguing in a boat about not having enough bread. Jesus asked them in Mark 8:17, "Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?" He was not shaming them. He was naming the thing that was actually in the way.

A hard heart is not always a rebellious heart. Usually it is just a heart that has gone unresponsive. Still showing up, still hearing, no longer moved. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Everything flows from there, which is exactly why that is where things go dull first.

The enemy does not need to keep you out of church. He just needs the Word to stay on the surface. Mark 4:15 says, "And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts." Hebrews 3:13 says to encourage one another daily, "lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin." It is rarely one big rebellion. It is drift you do not feel happening.

God already gave you a new heart when you were born again, so you are not manufacturing softness, you are staying open to what He put inside you. Practically that is small stuff. When a line in a message actually lands on Sunday, do not let Monday morning traffic erase it, put that line on your lock screen. When a friend sends you a verse on WhatsApp, read it twice out loud instead of leaving it on read. When someone tells you something true that you did not want to hear, sit with it for ten minutes before you start defending yourself.

Jeremiah 29:13 says, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." God is not hiding from you. Ask the Holy Spirit to keep you responsive, because He is the one who does the softening, not your willpower. You are not working to earn a soft heart. You are letting Him keep the one He already gave you.
