Jesus Asked For Water, Not Wine

A wedding in Cana ran out of wine and Mary went straight to Jesus about it. Not to the caterers. She knew what her Son could do.

John 2:5 records her instruction to the staff: "His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." No conditions attached. No checking whether it made sense first.

And what Jesus said made almost no sense. The party needed wine, and He told them to fill six stone jars with water, right up to the brim. If you were on that staff you would have been side eyeing everybody in the room.

They did it anyway, and the water became the best wine of the night. Isaiah 55:8 explains the gap: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord." His instruction rarely matches your plan, because His information is better than yours.

1 Corinthians 1:25 says, "Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men." Notice what those servants never had to do. They did not have to produce wine. They carried water, and Jesus handled the miracle.

That is still the arrangement. The Holy Spirit will nudge you toward something small and unimpressive, and your job is not to make it work, only to do it. Fill the jar. He has never needed your help with the wine part.
