The Fear God Wants Is Not Terror

The Bible tells you to fear God and also tells you not to be afraid. That looks like a contradiction until you notice the word is doing two different jobs.

Luke 12:5 records Jesus saying, "But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him." That is not a description of how you relate to God as His child. It is a statement about who actually holds authority.

Because on the other side, 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." And 1 John 4:18 says, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment." Torment never comes from God. The fear God actually wants is awe. Hebrews 12:28 says, "Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear." Reverence, not dread. The way you go quiet in front of something genuinely bigger than you.

And you get to hold that awe with zero anxiety about where you stand. Ephesians 1:6 says God "hath made us accepted in the beloved." Made, past tense. Your acceptance is not a probation you could fail out of after a bad week.

So it is His goodness, not His threat, that pulls you away from sin. The Holy Spirit does not motivate you with terror. He shows you a Father worth being amazed by, and that reaches deeper than fear ever could.
