A Glance Will Not Save You

Picture snakes all around you and someone says the fix is to go look at a statue on a pole. You would want a better plan than that.

Numbers 21:9 says, "And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived." Beheld. Not glanced at while walking past. They had to actually fix their eyes on it.

That distinction matters. A quick look at the pole and then straight back to staring at the bite would not have saved anybody. The brass serpent was their lifeline and they had to treat it like one.

Jesus is that for us now, and He already did the saving part. You are not looking at Him to earn something. You are looking because what He finished is the actual cure, and your attention is the only thing the enemy is still fighting for.

Straight up, this is where it gets practical. When the fight with your parents replays all evening, when the rejection email sits open in a tab you refuse to close, when the thing you did last year comes back to accuse you, notice how long you spend staring at the bite. Then give Him the same amount of time. Read the verse slowly. Say it out loud. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes it settle in you, so you are not working up a feeling, you are just looking in the right direction.

Eyes off the bite. Eyes on Jesus. He is already the cure, you only have to keep looking.
