The Father Ran Before The Apology Started

There is a specific kind of shame that keeps you from praying. Not doubt about whether God is real, just a sense that you have used up your welcome.

The younger son in Jesus' story burned through everything and rehearsed a speech on the road home. He was planning to negotiate himself down to hired help. He never got to finish it.

Luke 15:20 says, "And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him." A great way off. The father was already watching, and he moved first.

Then look at what he does instead of a lecture. Luke 15:22 says, "But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet." Robe, ring, shoes. Full son, immediately, with no probation period.

Repentance is not grovelling until God softens. It is turning around and walking toward a Father who was already running. The Holy Spirit is the One drawing you home right now, and that pull you feel is kindness, not accusation.

The older brother stayed home and still missed it, because he thought the father's love was payment for service. It never was. You are not too far out for the run to start, and you were never far enough in to earn it.
