Why Your Spiritual Well Feels Dry

There are stretches where prayer feels flat and the Bible reads like plain text on a page. It is worth asking what has been filling your attention lately, because attention and dryness are usually connected.

Jesus made a promise about this. John 4:14 says, "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." Read that again. The well is in you. It did not get removed the month you got busy.

So what happens? Matthew 13:22 says, "Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful." Nothing was taken away from you. Something just got piled on top of it.

And this is not a scolding. Feeling dry is not proof that you have failed at being a Christian, and it does not change what is inside you by one drop. The well is still there on the days you cannot feel a thing.

Nehemiah 8:10 says, "for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Notice whose joy it is. It is His, already given, not something you have to manufacture out of a good mood. The Holy Spirit is the One who stirs it up, so give Him a little more room today than the feed gets.

You are passing through here with something real to do, and it takes living water on the inside to do it. That water is not somewhere you have to travel to find. Jesus put it in you and it is still flowing.
