What Adam And Eve Really Doubted Was Love
For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
— Genesis 3:5
The garden story usually gets told like it was about fruit. Adam and Eve had daily access to God and still walked away from Him, so something had to shift in what they believed first.
God had been clear with them. Genesis 2:17 says, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." When they ate, they were straight up saying they did not believe Him. Nobody walks into something they are genuinely convinced will kill them.
Underneath that was a bigger lie. Genesis 3:5 says the serpent told them, "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Look at what he was actually selling. God is holding out on you. God is keeping the good thing for Himself. They doubted His heart before they ever doubted His word.
That is still the lie, and it usually shows up as a quiet thought that God is generous with everyone else and slower with you. Adam and Eve had a garden. You have a cross. They had to take God's goodness on trust, and you get to look at what it cost Him and know.
So when the loan gets rejected again, or the friend group clearly moved on without you, or the healing has not shown up yet, the question underneath is always the same one. Is He actually good to me. You do not settle that by arguing with yourself in the shower. Ask the Holy Spirit to make the cross real to you in that exact moment, because that is the only proof that holds.
Doubt does not lose because you managed to feel more certain. It loses when you look again at what He already gave up for you.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that You proved Your heart toward me at the cross and I never have to guess. I am loved right now, not only on my better days. Holy Spirit, make that real to me in the moment doubt shows up today. Show me where I have been believing You are holding out on me. I am standing on Your love by faith. Amen
Amen
