Empty And Clean Is Not The Same As Free

Getting free from something is the part everyone celebrates. Staying free is quieter, and it depends entirely on what moves into the space.

Jesus described it plainly. Matthew 12:43-45 says, "When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first."

Empty, swept, and garnished. The room was clean. It was also available. Clear out a messy room and leave it empty and you already know how that story goes.

This is not a warning meant to scare you into more effort. Ephesians 5:18 says, "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit." Filled is something done to you. God already gave you His Spirit, so staying full is about staying in His presence, not about guarding the door with your own strength.

Luke 12:48 says, "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." You have been given a lot. Not so you can be nervous about it, but so there is something real on the inside to live from.

So do not just quit the thing you are quitting. Fill the space. The Holy Spirit is right there, and the fullness is the freedom.
