Jesus Cancelled Your Debt, Not Postponed It

Some people carry a running tab in their head. The things they messed up, the people they let down, the version of themselves they were supposed to be by now. Jesus opened His public ministry by talking about exactly that.

Luke 4:19 says He came "To preach the acceptable year of the Lord." Everybody in that room knew what He meant. He was talking about Jubilee.

Leviticus 25:10 says, "And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and every man unto his family." Every fifty years the debts were wiped, and people who had lost everything walked back into what was theirs.

Jesus was not announcing a property reset. He was announcing yours. John 8:36 says, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Free indeed, not free on probation.

But what about the things you still struggle with? 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." That already happened to you. You are not working toward new, you are learning to live from it, and the Holy Spirit is the one teaching you how.

The debt was not reduced. It was cancelled. Put the bag down, it stopped being yours the day Jesus said it was paid.
