When Your Feelings Start Outranking The Truth
But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
— James 3:14-16
Offense does not announce itself. It shows up as a replay at one in the morning, the conversation you keep winning against someone who is not in the room.
The first sign is that feelings start outranking truth. What you feel about the person becomes more believable than what God said, and you begin building a case instead of a life. It can start anywhere, from a betrayal by someone close to an argument that got out of hand online.
James 3:14-15 puts it bluntly, "But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish." That thinking feels sharp and smart while you are inside it. James says check the source.
Here is the grace part. You are not the sum of the resentment you are carrying, and you do not have to grind it out of yourself. Philippians 4:6-7 says, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." His peace keeps your heart, not the other way around.
So hand it over instead of rehearsing it, and pray for the person while you are there. Philippians 4:8 says to think on "whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report." The Holy Spirit will help you redirect your mind, because that is exactly what He lives in you to do.
Letting it go does not mean the hurt was fine. It means refusing to let someone else's worst moment run your inner life. The peace is already in you, and it is worth more than winning the argument.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that Your peace already guards my heart through Christ. I am free, and no offense has a claim on me. Holy Spirit, help me hand this one over instead of replaying it. Give me real love for the person who hurt me. I let it go in faith. Amen
Amen
